OpenAI rival startup Anthropic raises $300M again

Anthropic continues to support the investor craze for generative artificial intelligence. According to the specialized website The Information, an American startup, an OpenAI competitor, the developer of the ChatGPT chat bot, has just raised an additional $ 300 million. It is now valued at $4.1 billion.

By the end of 2022, weeks after ChatGPT’s sensational public debut, Anthropic had already received between $300 million and $400 million from Google. It has raised nearly $1.5 billion since its inception in January 2021.

The startup was founded by former OpenAI executives. She also works on large natural language models. In particular, she developed a conversational robot named Claude. This is still in closed beta, although the waitlist was launched at the beginning of the year. It should be available to the general public “in the coming months”.

Start of the commercial stage

Last month, Anthropic also began making its generative AI models available to other companies. An important step to start monetizing his many scientific studies. Question and answer platform Quora and legal advice service Robin AI are among the first clients.

These two consecutive fundraisers are not only an unexpected effect. They should also allow Anthropic to continue its development until its turnover is close to zero. Working on artificial intelligence is really very expensive, not only to hire specialized engineers, but also to train these giant models in the cloud. This requires a very significant amount of computing power and consequently entails costs.
