“Other” iPhone storage, how to delete it and what is it?

If you’ve ever wondered what exactly is taking up all the space on your iPhone, you can easily find out from the settings menu on your device. One of the most frequently asked questions about storage on your iPhone is “Other Storage” or, as Apple is now calling it in iOS 15, “System Data.”

This guide is designed to help you understand what other iPhone storage is taking up on your device and how you can remove some of it to free up space on your iPhone.

You may have a situation where you need additional storage on your iPhone, you may be trying to download an update or install a new app and you are running out of space.

To free up space on your iPhone, you can delete some apps and files, if you have already done that, then another way to free up space on your iPhone is through other storage.

You can see what your iPhone storage is being used for by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage on your device. This will show you which apps are taking up space on your device.

What is Other Storage on iPhone and How to Free It Up?

You can see the “Other” section on your iPhone at the bottom of the app list, there are two lists, one for iOS and one for system data (it used to be called “Other”).

One way to easily clear some of this storage on your device is to clear your website’s data and history, which can be done in Safari.

To clear website data and history, you need to go to Settings > Safari and scroll down to Clear Website History and Data.

After that, you can check if it affected the amount used by other storage on your device.

Try changing messages from forever to 30 days or 1 year.

Another thing we can do is change how long messages are stored on our device, the default setting is “Forever” and if you have a lot of messages this can take up space.


You can change this setting to 30 days or one year instead of “Forever”. This can be done by going to Settings > Messages and scrolling down to Save Messages > and then selecting 1 year or 30 days. If you do this, all your old posts will be deleted after the time period you choose.

This didn’t clear up a lot of space, what else can I do?

If that didn’t clear up most of the space used for “Other” on your iPhone, there might be a bug causing the storage to be used up. This is something that I have experienced myself several times on my iPhone.

One thing you can do to clear this storage is to backup and restore your device, this is the nuclear option as it involves a full backup of your iPhone, then wiping it and restoring it completely. This may take some time depending on how much data you have on your device.

Another thing you can do to free up space on your iPhone is to offload some unused apps. There may be several applications installed on your device that you no longer need.

To do this, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and you will see an option to “Unload Unused Apps”, this can free up quite a lot of storage on my iPhone. With this feature, I was able to free up about 4.7 GB of memory. .
