PC Health Check: application functionalities are evolving

Microsoft’s new PC Health Check (Windows 11 Compatibility Tool) application, originally intended for users to check if their hardware was compatible with Windows 11, is now available for installation on older Windows 10 PCs, with expanded functionality .

The PC Health Check application for Windows 10 will be available automatically through Windows Update, but you can also download it manually from the Windows Update catalog using the tag KB5005463.

The application always checks if the hardware meets Microsoft’s minimum requirements for Windows 11 and if it is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade. The requirements are: at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage; UEFI Secure Boot enabled; a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12 or higher, with a WDDM 2.0 driver; and a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 included and activated.

The application has caused controversy because Microsoft’s minimum requirements are strict and exclude many PCs before 2019. Microsoft says these requirements are necessary to improve performance, stability, and security.

Microsoft reported that the new PC Health Check app is coming soon in a blog post last week for KB5005463. The application is available for devices with Windows 10 version 2004 and later, but it is not installed on devices with Windows 11.

“PC Health Check offers diagnostics to monitor device health and troubleshooting to improve performance, all from the convenience of a single dashboard,” Microsoft explains.

The main features include:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 – Provides a full eligibility check based on the minimum system requirements for Windows 11.
  • Backup and sync: Sign in or create a Microsoft account to sync preferences between devices and set up Microsoft OneDrive to protect your files.
  • Windows Update – Keep your device safe by always running the latest version of Windows 10.
  • Battery capacity: View the battery capacity compared to the original for devices that use one or more batteries.
  • Storage capacity – View the storage usage for the main drive containing files, applications, and Windows.
  • Start time – Manage startup schedules to improve startup time.
  • PC Health Tips – Provides additional tips to improve overall PC health and performance.

Microsoft notes that by default, when the PC Health Check application is open, it will “automatically install important application updates when they become available.”

Additionally, once the application is active, PC Health Check users will no longer be able to disable automatic updates. However, users can uninstall the application to regain control over these settings.
