Phil Spencer supports legal video game emulation

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, wants the video game industry to focus more on preserving games. Speaking to Axios, Phil Spencer said he hoped the industry would turn to emulation as a conservation solution.

“My hope (and I think I have to put it that way right now) is that as an industry we were working on a legal emulation that would allow modern hardware to run any older (within reason) kind of program, allowing someone to play any game, ”Spencer wrote.

Right now, the big three have very different approaches to making old games accessible. The PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games, as well as some older console games that can be accessed through the PS Now streaming service. Nintendo Switch players can access NES, SNES, N64, and Sega Genesis games through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, but there is currently no way to permanently purchase them on the Switch.

Xbox, on the other hand, has had a huge backward compatibility campaign in recent years. This week, Xbox added more than 70 games to its backward compatibility schedule on modern Xbox consoles. Between Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, Xbox is currently the only ecosystem that supports multiple generations of physical backward compatibility. Consistent access to games should be the goal of the entire industry, Spencer says.

“I think at the end of the day, if we were to say, ‘Hey, everyone should be able to buy any game, or own any game and keep playing,’ that seems like a big yardstick for us. As an industry,” Spencer wrote.

It has been a very busy week for Xbox. After celebrating Xbox’s 20th anniversary, Microsoft released Halo Infinite multiplayer more than three weeks earlier. This follows the success of Forza Horizon 5, which is the biggest release in Xbox Game Studios history.
