One of the few bright lights at the height of the pandemic was Sony’s Play At Home show, which saw it offer Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey during the first lockdown, then a ton of titles earlier this year. It was about free games, without obligation, without the need for subscription or purchase. (All you needed was a PS Store account and a PS5 or PS4 to play.)
It’s something that PlayStation boss Jim Ryan is proud that the company has been able to deliver, and hopes it has helped fans overcome the pandemic: “While everyone was dealing with the first shutdown, we thought that it would be a good thing and we were very happy with the response. Then we spent Christmas and started the confinement again and it was a bit miserable, so we thought it would be good to take it up again. So we started over over a period of several months and over 60 million games were downloaded as part of it.
That’s an absolutely colossal number of downloads, and it begs the question: will Play At Home be back for a third installment next year? “We will see how the world evolves. If the lockdown, God forbid, but if this were to continue into 2022 and beyond, who knows, we might feel like we have to start over for our community. “
