Playstation 5 variable refresh rate (VRR) system update tested

PlayStation gamers interested in learning more about the new PS5 variable refresh rate support that was rolled out in April 2022 will be happy to know that the Digital Foundry team has put it to the test. VRR support, if not already available, will be supported by Call of Duty: Vanguard, Destiny 2, Marvel’s SpiderMan: Miles Morales, Marvel’s SpiderMan Remastered, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village and more over time.

Sony explains that on TVs and PC monitors compatible with HDMI 2.1 VRR, Variable Refresh Rate or VRR will dynamically sync the display’s refresh rate to the PS5 console’s graphics output. Improve the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts such as frame rate issues and screen tearing. “Gameplay in many PS5 games feels smoother as scenes render smoothly, graphics look sharper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games may be fully optimized for VRR with a game patch, and future titles may include VRR support at launch,” Sony explained.

PS5 Variable Refresh Rate

“Last week, Sony enabled VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support on the PS5. After testing over 20 games, John and Alex are meeting to exchange opinions, discuss the benefits of the new feature, and identify some of its limitations in its current form.”

“As an additional option, you can also apply VRR to PS5 games that do not support it. This feature may improve video quality in some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can disable this option at any time. Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you are using, the game you are playing, and the visual mode selected for the particular game (if it supports multiple modes). “

After receiving the update, VRR will be automatically enabled for supported games if your PS5 console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR compatible TV or PC monitor. You can also turn it off under Display & Video in System Settings.
