PlayStation introduces a new controller… for smartphones

This new controller, signed by Backbone and PlayStation, won’t work for you on your PS5.

Since November 2020, PlayStation has been struggling with a shortage of electronic components, preventing it from selling as many PS5 consoles as the company should. But that hasn’t stopped him from developing new products, as evidenced by the next PSVR 2 and this new smartphone controller. No, this is not a dream, PlayStation is teaming up with brand Backbone for this white bezel that oddly reminds us of the PS5’s design.

Designed exclusively for Apple smartphones, the Backbone One controller allows you to play mobile games with maximum comfort, even on the go. Very easy to use, just connect the frame to your iPhone so that it is recognized and can be used directly in the game, of course with compatible games. Good news: Owners of the Sony Pulse 3D headset can easily connect their device to the controller for an immersive experience.

From a technical point of view, the Backbone One controller is powered by your iPhone thanks to the Lightning port, which means on the one hand that you do not need to recharge it, and on the other hand, your autonomy is in danger of taking a hit , we cannot yet know how much this will affect your battery, as well as heating up your phone.

Growing mobile strategy

This controller has been specifically designed to work with the PS Remote Play app, but is also compatible with many of the games and streaming services offered on the Apple App Store. It currently costs $99 on the Backbone site.

This novelty is, in any case, proof of serious progress in the field of smartphones, as the brand claimed a few months ago. Over the next few years, Sony intends to significantly increase its influence in the mobile device market through an increasing number of adaptations of its main licenses, as well as new games for these platforms. However, we regret that the Android version for the Backbone controller has not been announced.
