PM says Elon Musk doesn’t know much about Taiwan

Taiwan’s premier said on Tuesday that Elon Musk “knows little” about the self-governing island after the billionaire’s announcement that the island should become part of China.

Remarks by the richest man on the planet in an interview with the Financial Times about the tense relationship between Taiwan and China outraged the autonomy.

Its inhabitants live under the constant threat of invasion from Beijing, which sees it as a province to be recaptured one day, if necessary by force.

In an interview published Friday, Musk said he believes Taiwan needs to make a “reasonably acceptable” deal with Beijing to become China’s “special administrative zone” along the lines of Macau and Hong Kong.

Chinese leaders have long proposed applying this model to Taiwan, although it is opposed by the vast majority of the territory’s residents.

Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang is the island’s top official in responding to the SpaceX boss’s statements.

“Musk is a businessman,” Mr. Su said in a parliamentary session.

“He has a big car factory in Shanghai and he wants to promote his electric cars… A businessman can say that today and say something different tomorrow.”

“Musk speaks for himself, but he really doesn’t know much about Taiwan and doesn’t understand cross-strait relations,” he added.

Polls consistently show that the vast majority of Taiwanese do not want Beijing to rule them. This feeling has intensified since China’s takeover of Hong Kong, which suffocated all dissent.

The American businessman’s remarks about Taiwan were welcomed by several Chinese officials, including Beijing’s ambassador to Washington, Qin Gang.

Last week, the billionaire tweeted with President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials about how to end the conflict.

The billionaire proposed a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow based on new UN-supervised referendums, the surrender of Crimea to Russia, and a “neutral status” for Ukraine.

Vladimir Zelensky responded with another poll for his subscribers: “Which Elon Musk do you prefer, the one who supports Ukraine, or the one who supports Russia?” and Kyiv’s ambassador to Germany told him to “fuck off.”
