PS5: Sony would work on a Pro model with two graphics cards and cloud games

A patent filed by Sony and recently published through WIPO describes a PS5 “Pro” equipped with two APUs, that is, two graphics cards and two processors. The patent also mentions cloud games that could be used for backward compatibility with the console.

The PS5 has been around for over a year, but not all players have managed to get one yet. The exhaustion will last until next year, although the situation has improved in recent weeks. Despite the shortage, Sony is said to be already working on the next model, often dubbed the PS5 Pro. And for good reason, it would offer superior performance over the current model.

A patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment has just been published on December 8 in the database of WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization. It describes a “scalable gaming CPU / GPU design for home console and gaming on demand,” as reported by the Twitter account “@Zuby_Tech.” Therefore, this console would be a PS5 equipped with two APUs. As a reminder, an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) chip integrates a processor (CPU) and a graphics card (GPU).

Is the PS5 Pro coming?

Sony’s patent diagram shared in the tweet below does indeed indicate the presence of two APUs. Therefore, the next PS5 could have two graphics cards to provide better performance for gamers. The main graphics card would be used to run the games. The second could improve performance at any time when needed.

This patent first appeared last year. The PS5 Pro was talking about it at the same time as the PS5 Lite, which would be the equivalent of the Xbox Series S. There is no model officially confirmed by Sony yet, but the PS5 Pro seems to be getting closer and closer. The patent published in the WIPO database explains that: “In a multi-GPU simulation environment, the management of the frame buffer can be implemented by multiple GPUs that reproduce the respective video frames or the respective parts of each frame of video”.

Therefore, the next model of the PS5 would be equipped with two graphics cards, but that is not all. Sony is also considering cloud gaming. Additionally, Xbox cloud games have been available for a few weeks on the Xbox Series and Xbox One. The PlayStation 5 doesn’t need cloud games to run next-gen games, but you could use it for backward compatibility. Gamers are still awaiting the arrival of backward compatibility for PS1, PS2, and PS3 games on the PlayStation 5. Therefore, Sony would not have given up on the idea and could soon offer this feature through games on. Cloud.
