Qualcomm: Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Will Power ARM PCs

The partnership that gave Qualcomm exclusivity for Windows-compatible ARM chips is coming to an end. Not to be surprised by the competition, the SoC maker has put the small plates in the big ones and has announced the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 as well as a cheaper version, the Snapdragon 7c + Gen 3.

These announcements are the continuation of the new processor for smartphones, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The 8cx, a high-performance chip

Recorded at 5nm, the 8cx will provide, according to its manufacturer, up to 85% more performance for the CPU part and 60% for the GPU. This new processor should allow Full HD game playback at 120 frames per second.

It is also optimized to allow users to play 50% longer than the competition and would allow equipped devices a standard battery life of several days.

The ISP supports up to 4 cameras and 4K HDR video recording. It also supports the latest Qualcomm algorithms to automate focus, white balance, and exposure. Camera startup is also 15% faster than the previous generation.

Regarding connectivity, the processor, associated with the new X65 modem, can support speeds of up to 10 Gb / s. The manufacturer has announced the possibility of pairing it with X55 (7.5 Gb / s) and Snapdragon X62 (4.4 Gb / s) modems for more flexibility.

Audio receives more artificial intelligence support for noise cancellation and echo cancellation in an effort to deliver the highest quality video conferencing.

The 7c +, an accessible chip

Qualcomm has revealed little information about this chip designed for entry-level Windows and Chromebook computers. It is recorded at 6nm and should offer 60% more CPU performance and up to 70% for the GPU part.

It is coupled to the X55 modem to achieve a maximum download speed of 7.5 Gb / s in 5G. The manufacturer has not provided any other information about the audio part or the management of the cameras.

Tokens to keep you patient

Even if it will be necessary to wait for the first benchmarks to compare its new chips with the competition, the performance gain would allow Qualcomm to catch up in the PC universe. As cool as they are, these new Snapdragons are just one step ahead of a massive overhaul scheduled for next year.

With the acquisition of Nuvia, a chipmaker created by former Apple employees, Qualcomm intends to make a massive entry into the PC market and offer chips to match Apple’s M-series. An ambitious goal that could revolutionize the laptop market in the coming years.

The first devices equipped with 8cx Gen 3 and 7c + Gen 3 chips should ship during the first quarter of 2022.
