Things we didn’t expect to go viral this weekend: a realistic carpet tile rendered in Dreams on PlayStation 4. The image – which shows a square of inexpensive office floor stuck in the sun, complete with lint and thrown hair details – looks like a photograph at first glance, and at first we thought the watermark had been overlaid.
However, it’s the work of Media Molecule’s lead lead designer, John Beech, that has created similarly stunning stuff in the past. It was the randomness of it that really caught our attention: we saw photorealistic forests, but a carpet tile? It’s so boring and ordinary, and yet Beech made it look extraordinary.
It must be said: what a phenomenal game!
