Regional disparities in immunization of children aged 5 to 11 years

In the Greater Quebec City region, about one in two children has received a first dose of the vaccine, a proportion that varies, however, from place to place. In some areas of Chaudière-Appalaches, less than 30% of children between the ages of 5 and 11 have rolled up their sleeves.

In this region as a whole, 44% of children received a first dose, a proportion that jumps to 52% if one takes into account those who made an appointment. However, the vaccination rate is much lower in Beauce and Les Etchemins (see table below).

This is a trend comparable to that observed in other age groups, indicates Marie-Ève Tanguay, director of vaccination at the CISSS of Chaudière-Appalaches. “The parents of these children are less vaccinated,” he emphasizes.

“We expect this to continue to increase, particularly with the arrival of the Omicron variant and the number of cases that is constantly increasing. The more people we have vaccinated, the less the virus will spread. Currently, the situation is really worrying, ”adds Ms. Tanguay.

In Chaudière-Appalaches, 308 new cases were identified yesterday, or 20 more than the day before, while in Capitale-Nationale, 229 people were declared positive yesterday, compared to 171 on Thursday.

On the north bank of the river, the vaccination rate for the first dose among children aged 5 to 11 years is 51%, a proportion that rises to 64% with appointments, the highest in the province, indicates Mélanie Otis, spokeswoman for the CIUSSS. of the Capitale-Nationale.

Portneuf is the sector with the lowest vaccination coverage for children, while it is highest in Charlevoix (see box below).

Although the vaccination operation in schools is almost complete, regional public health authorities expect to see these numbers rise even more in the coming days. “Things are still going well, we are hopeful to continue this momentum,” said Ms. Otis.

At the same time, efforts are intensifying to offer the third dose to all eligible individuals. CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale is looking for 200 vaccinators to speed up the process.

The new hires yesterday made it possible to add 500 appointments at the Université Laval vaccination center before December 31. Other time slots will be added in the coming days, he says.
