Samsung’s new PS5 SSD costs half as much as the console

  • The new Samsung 980 Pro SSD is designed for the PS5 and comes with its own heat sink.
  • The 1TB version costs $ 249 and the 2TB model costs $ 449. Both are released on October 29.
  • The drive offers fast read speeds of up to 7,000MB / s and write speeds of up to 5,100MB / s.

Samsung has announced a new SSD that is fully compatible with the PS5. The Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD meets all of Sony’s technical benchmarks and will be an ideal choice if you’re looking to upgrade your console’s hard drive, assuming it can handle the $ 249 price tag.

The Samsung 980 Pro is technically not a new SSD. It has been available at major retailers for several months, but Samsung is launching a new model designed specifically for the PS5. The main difference between the currently available 980 Pro SSD and this new version is that the latter comes with a pre-installed heat sink.

Sony recommends that any SSD added to the console’s storage expansion slot include a heat sink to keep the console’s internal temperatures low enough to maintain performance. While you can already buy a 980 Pro SSD and install your own heatsink, it is appreciated that less tech-savvy customers have the option to choose a ready-to-go PS5-ready SSD.

In terms of performance, the 980 Pro SSD is a monster. It offers read speeds of up to 7,000MB / s and write speeds of up to 5,100MB / s. This puts the SSD 980 Pro well above the required 5,500MB / s read speed that Sony recommends. It also goes without saying that the supplied heatsink meets the size dimensions to fit inside the console’s SSD expansion slot.

Two models of the new 980 Pro SSD will be released on October 29. The standard 1TB version will cost $ 249. The price of the 2TB model is even harder to swallow, it will cost $ 449, which is only $ 50 less than the cost of a PS5 itself.

At those prices, these units are clearly aimed at gamers with a large library of the best PS5 games willing to pay a high price for convenience. However, you can save some money by buying a regular Samsung 980 Pro for around $ 180 and connecting your own heat sink. You can buy one separately for as little as $ 15.

While we haven’t got our hands on the 980 Pro yet, we’ve tested a WD_Black SN850 SSD with a PS5 and got excellent results. Anyone looking for a little more hard drive space can consider purchasing an additional SSD. However, you may want to wait for more solid PS5 hard drive deals as we get closer to Black Friday before making your selection.
