Toronto: E-commerce giant Shopify is partnering with music streaming giant Spotify in a partnership that the Canadian company says will give musicians more control over their product sales on the music platform.

The Ottawa-based company has struck a deal with the leading subscription music streaming service that will make its online retail business accessible on Spotify’s artist pages, along with their latest songs.

According to Shopify, implementing an “all-in-one commerce platform” on Spotify gives musicians a variety of options to create and display their online store products for their fans.

They can use Shopify’s various digital solutions to create new products on the fly with ‘print-on-demand’ options that can produce items like coffee mugs, wall hangings, and sweaters on short notice.

These tools could prove particularly useful as musicians look to capitalize on the era of TikTok, which can make one of their songs generate massive interest overnight.

Merchandise sales have become a bigger part of the music industry in recent years, as album sales have declined and the COVID-19 pandemic crippled lucrative tours.

Some musicians have found other ways to sell products using their name. For example, Pharrell launched Humanrace, a line of skin care products, while Drake sells luxury candles through his Better World Fragrance House company.

Shopify claims that thousands of musicians are already using its services on their websites and selling items through other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram.

“For many music lovers, Spotify is the primary medium for interacting with an artist’s music, and we’re excited to give artists a new way to capitalize on that,” Spotify Chief Artist Camille Hearst said Wednesday. , in a press release.

“We want to provide artists with as many resources as possible to help turn listeners into fans, fans into superfans, and ultimately help artists earn more.”

Shopify’s services will be an alternative to Spotify’s existing relationship with Merchbar, a more traditional online merchandise platform that primarily specializes in selling albums and clothing.
