Smaller Vaccine Stocks Pfizer: Modern for Everyone, Even Those Under 30?

When asked about a possible shortage of Pfizer vaccine stocks, Health Minister Olivier Véran wanted to be reassuring. But he acknowledges that the need to rebalance stocks will lead to priority administration of the Moderna third-dose vaccine to French people over 30 years of age. And for those under 30 years of age? It is up to everyone to choose.

Since the government’s announcement of the upcoming loss of the health pass without a third dose, the French have flocked to vaccination posts. Problem, several mayors in France indicated that the supply chain for Pfizer vaccine, the most injected currently, could not keep up. In some vaccination centers, a shortage of stocks threatens. This Thursday, December 2, the president of the mayors of France, Cannois David Lisnard, asked the government to ask him the procedure to follow.

“Moderna is not going to be compulsory for those under 30 years of age”

Appeal heard by the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran. This Friday, the latter indicated that France had stocks for the two vaccines, although the Moderna product was higher. “Moderna is not going to be mandatory for those under 30,” the minister said, although he acknowledged that it would be faster to get an appointment for the third dose by agreeing to receive an injection of Moderna.

Every day, between 600 and 700,000 spaces are opened for you to get vaccinated in more than 1,200 centers, at your pharmacist, at your doctor. We have a stock of effective mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer) to reach the target of a protected population by January 15th. pic.twitter.com/1euoCbraic

Because both vaccines work with messenger RNA technology. For doctors, therefore, in theory, they are interchangeable without risk. Therefore, the need to balance stocks will push vaccination centers to offer Moderna instead of Pfizer to French people over 30 in the coming weeks. The Health Ministry even announced that 27% of the doses of Pfizer that are normally distributed would be replaced by doses of Moderna. But nothing will prevent Moderna from being administered to a patient under the age of 30.

Why this age distinction?

But why this age distinction? Studies conducted since the beginning of the epidemic have shown that younger people are at higher risk of developing myocarditis as a side effect of the Moderna vaccine. Alain Fischer, president of the Vaccine Strategy Guidance Council, recently provided details.

We have a very high level of protection in terms of neutralizing antibodies, both with Pfizer and with Moderna ”, specifies the scientist. “The small nuance is in tolerance, which led to using Moderna only after the age of 30, because among the side effects, extremely rare for the second injection in men, there are some more cases of myocarditis.”
