What happens on the passenger side when an incident slows down a commuter train line? How are users distributed among other means of transport when a train is canceled? The Saclay Plateau-based technology research institute SystemX conducted simulations as part of a research project launched in 2017, Augmented Traveler Information (IVA). SNCF, Île-de-France Mobilités, the organization in charge of transport in the Paris region, the Gustave Eiffel University and the company Kisio Digital, a route planner provider belonging to the Keolis group, and the Parisian start-up SpirOps participated. specialized in artificial intelligence.

The integration of private vehicles: bicycles, scooters, etc.

The stakes were twofold. Both provide transport operators with a short- and medium-term view of what users are doing, but also adapt passenger information in the event of a disruption and see what impact it has. “A third component consisted of improving the interoperability of information systems and modes of transport,” adds Mostepha Khouadjia, project manager. We have developed an overlay to the Kisio Digital route planner to integrate private vehicles, bicycles, scooters… ”.

The data ranged from 2016 to before the Covid-19 health crisis, related to the H line of the Transilien: load rate, incidents, train occupancy, number of passengers getting on or off at each stop … Project partners They were able to work on the prediction of these various indicators through artificial intelligence technologies, for example to predict attendance in a quarter of an hour, half an hour, an hour …

Regulation of passenger flows

The route planner was also able to suggest routes based on user preferences. As the priority given to the speed of the trip, or to comfort (the application will offer a low volume train), to accessibility for people with disabilities or reduced mobility (the calculator will direct the user to platforms with little traffic). .. “Until now, transport operators were focused on regulating traffic, they were aware of everything that was happening on their network, continues Mostepha Khouadjia. There, they had the ability to regulate passenger flows as well, and the two are correlated ”.

The IVA project consisted of “playing” scenarios with real data to see, for example, what are the consequences of an incident on user flows. What are your alternative solutions and with what impact on other means of transport. However, it wasn’t just about technology. SystemX has conducted surveys of travelers from Transilien H, we have been able to collect a large amount of data about their behavior in disturbed situations, the reasons for their trip ”. This made it possible to build a behavior model for travelers in this or that situation, which was then integrated into the SpirOps simulator.

At the end of the project, the predictive models thus developed were taken over by SNCF and Ile-de-France Mobilités to carry out further tests and simulations before, perhaps, turning them into real operational tools and applications for the target users.
