Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3: First Windows 11 Performance Leaks

Geekbench scores for a computer with a Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 processor have been leaked, suggesting an imminent launch of the future Qualcomm SoC. The performance doesn’t seem dazzling for this chip dedicated to Windows laptops.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 SoCs have been talking about them for several months, but they are slow to point at the tips of their transistors. Since some leaks in March 2021, little news has come about this chip destined mainly for Windows 11 laptops. It should be equipped with new Gold + stamped cores, more efficient than those that equip the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 launched in 2020.

Correct performance

A benchmark result has been posted on Geekbench, from a currently unknown Lenovo computer. The values are correct, but without reaching the ankle of Apple’s M1, but based on the same architecture. The PC achieved a single-core score of 1010 and multi-core of 5335, which puts it slightly ahead of an Intel Core i7-1165G7 (in multiples) and almost on par with an AMD Ryzen 5500U. Be careful, Geekbench has always performed well on Qualcomm 8cx and 7c SoCs. On the other hand, a certain lag is felt with real applications where the difference is clearly more important with processors from AMD and Intel.

However, the autonomy gains provided by the ARM architecture run the risk of being undermined by the Gold + cores, and Windows ARM optimization is expected to be improved, because so far the results have not been clearly achieved, even in the appointment. This type of computer is ultimately very rare and there are only a few models currently equipped with Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, at Samsung, Lenovo and HP in particular, in models that are sold little or not sold in France.

Qualcomm a little behind

Another problem: we run the risk that this new Snapdragon will not arrive before the beginning of 2022. By then, Intel will normally have introduced its 12th generation Alder Lake mobile processors. AMD will follow closely with the hidden 3D version of its Zen 3 architecture, while Apple may soon announce the M2 for MacBook Air.

Therefore, Qualcomm is behind in the performance race and may not be competitive. As we said just a few days ago, an opening to Windows ARM competition would be welcome to promote innovations on the Windows ARM side …
