Following its release, the PlayStation 5 fell victim to its success and a shortage of the video game console was quickly noted. This shortage could worsen if Sony considers reducing PS5 production due to component and logistics issues.

Since its release in late 2020, video game enthusiasts have faced some difficulties acquiring the PlayStation 5. This task may become even more difficult as Sony has been reported to plan to cut production of the console by one million copies to the fiscal year that will end in March 2022. Thus, the production that has been foreseen in 16 million consoles will be reduced to 15 million consoles. According to a Bloomberg report, the move was tackled in the face of challenges related to the global shortage of electronic components and logistical challenges.

In addition to the shortage of electronic components that is holding back production, these logistical problems would also be related to the deployment of vaccines against Covid-19, said the Journal du Geek. Regarding the electronic component shortage problem, Sony is trying to fix it by partnering with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to build a semiconductor production plant in Kumamoto, Japan. While this should help meet the strong global market demand for specialty chips, the results of this collaboration will not be immediate.

Of course, Sony is not the only company suffering from this shortage of electronic components that could very well persist until 2023. This is also the case of Nintendo and Valve who have decided to delay the launch of their novelty: the Steam Deck console. Are you having trouble getting a PS5?
