SpaceX will bring humans to Mars in 10 years, says Elon Musk

SpaceX aims to send astronauts to Mars as soon as possible to begin colonizing the planet. Elon Musk says his space company will be able to get humans to the Red Planet within 10 years at the latest.

The colonization of Mars has always been a goal of Elon Musk who wants to ensure the survival of the human species by making it interplanetary. Last year, the American billionaire claimed to want to send 1 million people to Mars by 2050. Before we can colonize the red planet, we must first succeed in sending astronauts there.

Elon Musk has claimed that SpaceX will bring humans to Mars within 10 years. He made the ambitious statement on the podcast of Lex Fridman, an artificial intelligence researcher at MIT. The founder of SpaceX also reiterated that humanity would have to become a “multiplanetary species” to survive in the future.

SpaceX will send humans to Mars in the best of 5 years

Lex Fridman asked Elon Musk when he thinks SpaceX can send humans to Mars. He thought for 20 seconds before answering that “the best case is about 5 years, the worst is 10 years.” Therefore, astronauts could land on the red planet as early as 2026.

In fact, the liftoff of the first manned flight to Mars relies heavily on the Starship rocket, which to date is the largest space rocket ever designed. Additionally, Elon Musk wants to launch Starship’s first orbital flight in January 2022. He explained on the podcast that “Starship is the most complex and advanced rocket ever made.”

The main problem SpaceX is facing today is the production of the Raptor rocket engines used by Starship. A few weeks ago, Elon Musk even told his collaborators that SpaceX is threatened with bankruptcy. The company should increase the launch frequency of its spacecraft next year. Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX is still optimizing the Starship design. His company is also working to reduce the cost of a trip to Mars.

The American billionaire explained that “there is a certain cost per ton on the surface of Mars where we can agree to establish a self-sufficient city and on top of that we cannot afford to do so.” Precisely, he clarified that “at the moment, you cannot fly to Mars for 1000 billion dollars. No amount of money could get you to Mars. We have to make this really possible. “
