COVID 19 MEETINGS
As of today, about 13,500 young people from Lower Saint-Laurent between the ages of 5 and 11 have access to vaccination against COVID-19. Appointment spaces are available at the eight vaccination sites in the region.
Mandatory appointments are always made on the Clic Santé website or by phone at 1-877-644-4545. Vaccination clinics will also be offered Dec. 6-21 in some 120 elementary schools in the region.
Considered very effective and safe, the vaccine that will be offered to children ages 5 to 11 will be that of Pfizer-BioNTech. “This vaccine has been approved by Health Canada after rigorous testing. It is very safe and its efficacy rate is 91% after administration of dose 2. The amount of messenger RNA in the vaccine has been adapted for this age group. The dose given with this vaccine is not the same as that given to adolescents. It’s a third of that dose, which causes little or no side effects, ”says Dr. Sylvain Leduc, regional director of public health. When the first dose is given, an appointment for the second dose will be scheduled after the recommended eight week delay.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Leduc expected that parents would respond in large numbers to this offer to vaccinate their children. “We are ready to answer questions, reassure parents, explain to those who still doubt, and even give them time to digest the information surrounding this vaccine.”
“In the next few hours, the School Service Centers will send parents all the necessary protocol ensuring that families and children have great accessibility to vaccination during the coming weeks. In our service centers, every effort will be made to provide the most favorable climate possible for children in the presence of their parents. Our staff will be especially attentive, decorations will be installed and even colored walls will be accessible, complying with sanitary regulations. It is recommended that children wear a short-sleeved sweater to facilitate vaccination, “suggests Murielle Therrien, director of vaccination at the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent.
“Parents will need to complete a vaccination consent form which will then be sent to their school service center schools. Parents with concerns or questions who would like to speak with a professional to make an informed decision for their children will be able to reach an accessible phone service beginning Saturday, ”adds Ms. Therrien.
Open on Tuesday, the Clic Santé headquarters in Bas-Saint-Laurent already has 1,900 appointments made. The first two weeks in the clinic are almost 100% complete.
