Swissmedic authorizes the recall of the Pfizer vaccine from the age of 16

Swissmedic has approved the extension of the coronavirus booster vaccine to all persons over 16 years of age for the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. Vulnerable people can still benefit from a third dose from the age of 12.

In all cases, the condition is that the injection of the second dose is at least six months old. The booster vaccine “may maintain protection against Covid-19,” the Swiss Institute for Therapeutics said in a press release on Tuesday.

Swissmedic made this decision, in particular, on the basis of a study involving 10,000 participants between the ages of 16 and 87. The intermediate results of this study did not reveal any evidence indicating the existence of new aspects related to the risks of the vaccine, he explains.

Swissmedic ‘continues to closely monitor the benefits and risks of the vaccine’ for the prevention of coronavirus disease in Switzerland and the rest of the world.

The therapeutics surveillance and authorization authority had given the green light for a third dose of messenger RNA vaccines in late October. This ‘booster’ dose has been licensed for Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna. This decision affected “particularly vulnerable people” and “people with a weakened immune system” from the age of 12.
