Tablets, home automation, Echo… Amazon prepares for a cascade of announcements

Amazon has just sent out press invitations to a virtual event where the e-commerce giant will announce new products, features and services. The invite-only stream will take place on September 28, a year after Amazon’s last announcements made last fall. The invitation mentions various categories of ad types, although no specific product is mentioned.

However, Amazon’s presentations should primarily focus on the new Kindle e-reader announced earlier this month. After seeing Amazon announce new Kindle and Kindle Kids e-readers, the company also just announced four new Kindle Fire HD 8 tablets. As a result, Amazon is freeing up time during the invite-only event to focus on other announcements. And to say that there should be a lot of them.

Based on similar events from years past, we can expect Amazon to announce new Echo devices, Alexa improvements possibly including new home security services, possibly new Ring devices – has a Ring autonomous drone ever flown? — and possibly a full launch of the Astro canine robot. A few years ago, Amazon used a similar event to announce an Alexa-equipped microwave oven and a clock that interacts with timers you set via Alexa.

As for the new Kindle Fire HD 8 models, they range from the standard Fire HD 8 to the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro for older kids. This year, Amazon even announced a Disney Design Bundle with Disney Mickey or Disney Princess cases. All of the new Fire HD 8 tablets share the same basic specs, such as an 8-inch HD display, a 30% increase in performance, up to 13 hours total battery life, and a USB-C charging port. You can get the Fire HD 8 in 32GB or 64GB of storage, and they all support microSD cards for storage expansion up to 1TB.

The Fire HD 8 Plus has 3GB of storage (up from 2GB in the standard model), 9W wired charging, wireless charging, and a 5MP rear camera. Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids tablets are also getting a hardware upgrade. The standard Fire HD 8 Kids tablet comes in blue or purple. It’s aimed at kids ages 3 to 7 and comes with a one-year Amazon Kids+ subscription and a two-year worry-free guarantee.

The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet is designed for kids aged 6 to 12 and comes with a case designed for older kids, the same 1-year Amazon Kids+ subscription, and a 2-year warranty. The Kids Pro tablet has access to Amazon’s digital stores, where kids can search for new apps, books, and games, and then send permission requests to their parents if they want to download them.
