About 500 Tesla owners said they were stranded in their cars on Friday due to a problem with the company’s mobile app, according to Reuters.

The outage appeared to occur around 3:03 p.m. ET, according to the outage detector’s fault monitoring website.

The Electrek blog first reported on the outage, with editor-in-chief Fred Lambert saying he couldn’t connect to his car through the app.

Drivers took to Twitter to complain about the problem, with some speaking directly to Tesla and Elon Musk.

“I am experiencing a 500 server error connecting my @tesla Model 3 to my iOS application in Seoul, South Korea. It seems to be a global problem. @Elon Musk, ”wrote one user.

In response to the owner of Tesla, Musk tweeted: “I should get back online now. It seems that we accidentally increased the verbosity of the network traffic. “

He added: “Our apologies, we will take steps to ensure this does not happen again. ”

Tesla did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Tesla owners can unlock and access their cars through the mobile app, rather than traveling with the key.

However, a Tesla representative previously told Mary Hanbury from the insider that the key is still the primary means of using the car. The representative recommended that customers always carry this with them in case their phones go out, for example.

Model 3 owners also have the option to unlock their Tesla using the “phone as key” feature, which connects to the car via Bluetooth. If the app doesn’t work, owners will still be able to use this service.

Tesla systems have had a few hiccups in the past.

In 2019, customers said they were “stranded” after the app stopped working. And last September, insider’s Graham Rapier reported that Tesla’s network appeared to briefly fail, forcing some customers to use their physical keys.
