Several Canadian companies told their customers that they had encountered technical difficulties or outages early Thursday afternoon.
Royal Bank has indicated in messages to customers on Twitter that it is aware of an issue affecting its online and mobile banking services, and is working to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
Customers who visited the bank’s website reported receiving a Domain Addressing System (DNS) failure message, telling them that the services were not available.
Bank of Montreal and President’s Choice Financial also told clients on Twitter that they had resolved technical issues and apologized for the difficulties. The Bank of Montreal and the Royal Bank have since started telling people their sites are back.
The Down Detector monitoring website showed a sharp increase in technical difficulties reported on the websites of the three companies, as well as that of Scotiabank, Air Canada and Airbnb.
Several banks and other companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but cloud service provider Akamai Technologies reported a downtime and said it implemented a fix.
