Before Wimbledon, Poland’s Iga Swiatek won 6 titles in a row (from February to June 2022). Alize Cornet came to break this streak of 37 straight wins in the 16th round of the London Major… And Caroline Garcia this Friday also offered herself the World No. 1 head in the quarter-finals. Open Championship of Poland. Mental victory, in 3 sets: 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Swiatek lost at home to Caroline Garcia!
After the failure at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek went home to recover in Warsaw, in her hometown. But the Pole bowed again to the Frenchman. This time against Caroline Garcia. The 28-year-old tennis player was perfectly able to manage her emotions in order to win in 3 sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-4).
The tricolor number 2 in the WTA rankings (45th) accomplished the feat by eliminating Iga Swiatek on clay, her favorite surface (two-time Roland-Garros winner). After 17 straight wins on the ground in 2022, Swiatek just suffered his first loss to Garcia. She will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini (58th in the world) in the semi-finals and her second WTA 250 after the one in Hamburg last month is in sight.
It’s great to see Garcia at this level this season, in the WTA round robin, after two rather difficult years. It remains to pass this milestone of the 1/8 finals of the Grand Slam tournaments (which she passed only once in her career, in 2017). But she is on the rise and we hope to see her perform at the next US Open starting August 29th.
