STAVANGER, Norway (Reuters) – Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, said on Monday he is aiming for 100% fully autonomous electric vehicles by the end of the year, expressing hopes for widespread commercialization in the United States. Europe subject to regulatory approval.

Speaking at an energy conference in Norway, the Tesla founder said his focus is on developing the SpaceX spacecraft and fully autonomous electric vehicles.

“Two technologies that I am focusing on and that I ideally expect to have developed by the end of the year are the launch of our spacecraft into orbit (…) and the operational autonomous driving of Tesla cars.”

“Make autonomous driving available on a large scale, at least in the United States and (…) potentially in Europe, depending on the regulatory green light,” he added.

The head of Tesla also spoke in favor of continuing the exploitation of oil and natural gas while developing renewable energy sources.

“Really, I think that in the short term we should use oil and gas, because otherwise civilization will collapse,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the conference.

“One of the biggest challenges the world is facing is the transition to sustainable energy and a sustainable economy,” he continued. “It will take several decades to get there.”
