Tesla upgrades his Cybertruck to integrate “Crab Mode” – Numerama

Not yet officially marketed, the Tesla Cybertruck is already gaining functionality. The brand’s 100% electric truck will arrive with 4 motors to offer “Crab Mode”, which makes it easier to move diagonally with the vehicle.

Tesla is modifying the functionality of its Cybertruck. A few weeks after removing the machine’s technical sheet from its site, the manufacturer finally gives some news about the future of its 100% electric pickup.

Elon Musk reports on Cybertruck

As noted by the Electrek site, Elon Musk reached out about the new features of the device, in response to a tweet. “Initial production will be a 4-motor variant, with independent torque control and super-fast response for each wheel,” explained the Tesla CEO. A change from the latest information that the Cybertruck only comes with three engines.

So each wheel will have its own dedicated motor, a bit like General Motors’ 100% electric Hummer. “It will have front and rear steering wheels. […] It will be able to move diagonally like a crab, ”Musk said on Twitter. So it appears that Tesla is following suit and embracing the same technologies and tricks as the competition.

Crab Trip Added to Tesla’s Cybertruck

The “crab” motion actually allows you to steer each of the car’s wheels to facilitate movement over rough terrain. By changing the angle of each of the wheels, the device can move diagonally. General Electrics had just demonstrated this feature, nicknamed “Crabwalk” on its electric Hummer.

Therefore, Tesla is trying to catch up on the electric truck market. The Cybertruck, however introduced in 2019, has been overtaken in the market by Rivian and its R1T and by the General Motors Hummer, which has great arguments in favor.

Tesla’s electric truck does not yet have a firm market date, but the automaker could begin production once construction of the Model Y is well underway at its Texas plant.
