The car consumes and pollutes less, according to the EPA

The average rate of CO2 emissions generated by new vehicles reached its lowest level in the United States in 2020, coinciding at the same time with the lowest average fuel consumption recorded among our neighbors south of the border, according to the US Environmental Protection. US Agency (EPA).

In its annual report, the EPA notes that, from 2015 to 2020, average fuel consumption in the United States increased from 24.6 mpg (9.6 L / 100 km) to 25.4 mpg (9.3 L / 100 km). 100 km), while the rate of carbon dioxide emissions dropped a few points, from 360 to 349 g / mi.

During the same period, Toyota was the manufacturer that recorded the largest reduction in CO2 emissions (27 g / mile), closely followed by Kia (21 g / mile), despite the fact that the number of commercial vehicles has grown dramatically during these five years. years. Remember that SUVs and crossovers generally have higher fuel consumption rates than the automobiles from which they are derived, particularly due to their greater weight.

On the other hand, Volkswagen and Mazda saw their emissions rate rise by 15 g / mi. The two manufacturers have significantly reduced their car production in favor of more commercial vehicles.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: the best and the worst

Top Fuel Economy: Honda averaging 29.1 mpg (8.1 L / 100 km), just ahead of Subaru averaging 28.5 mpg (8.25 L / 100 km). In third place is the manufacturer Hyundai, with an average of 28.4 mpg (8.28 L / 100 km); Despite an average consumption lower than in 2019, it loses one position in the ranking.

Note that the manufacturer Tesla is one of a kind, with its line of purely electric cars. The US division saw its average fuel mileage, calculated in mpg in this case, drop from 97.1 mpg (2.4 L / 100 km) to 119.1 mpg (1.98 L / 100 km) from 2015 to 2020 ..

At the other end of the spectrum, the manufacturer Stellantis – born from the merger of the manufacturers FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) – registered a decrease during the period and the worst average consumption with 21.3 mpg (11 L / 100 km). Six other manufacturers fared no better than the industry average at 24.6 mpg: Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW and Toyota.

The EPA picture is very clear: all manufacturers that have managed to reduce their average fuel consumption have also reduced their rate of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

And since Tesla vehicles emit zero emissions, Honda has the fewest CO2 emissions (305g / mi) ahead of Subaru and Hyundai, both at 312g / mi. On the contrary, Stellantis is the manufacturer that rejects the most, with 418 g / ml.

And in Canada?

North of the 49th parallel, it is the Department of Natural Resources that records everything related to the consumption of the Canadian vehicle fleet and the CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere. Although it does not calculate average fuel consumption for each car brand, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) publishes a report on average fleet carbon exhaust emissions in g / mi for cars and light trucks.

The most recent data from NRCan dates back to the 2019 model year, a few months before the pandemic and the disruption in driving habits.

In 2019, for passenger cars, Mitsubishi posted the lowest exhaust gas average at 162g / mi, behind Tesla, the only purely electric manufacturer in Canada. Interestingly, the Mitsubishi average in 2018 was less than 151 g / mi. Second, General Motors had a lower average than in 2018 at 179 g / mi. The industry average in 2019 was 211 g / mi.

On the light truck side, Subaru posted the best average, at 241 g / mi, ahead of Mitsubishi (261 g / mi) and Mazda (266 g / mi). Unsurprisingly, the light truck average was highest in 2019, at 320g / mi.

Where can I find the fuel consumption rating of my vehicle?

For more information on the fuel economy rating of your vehicle, or even a new model you are looking for, check out the Fuel Economy Rating Finder, which is very comprehensive and allows you to compare vehicles between them. The ministry also publishes an annual fuel economy guide on the web to educate motorists on good vehicles, fuel-efficient driving, and a number of topics related to buying a new vehicle.

To get feedback from our employees during APA-organized tests, you can refer to the Road Tests section and our annual guide to new and used cars produced in collaboration with the APA.
