The “electric” register explodes

The number of electric cars registered in Luxembourg is skyrocketing and the trend has accelerated dramatically in recent months. According to the latest figures provided this Tuesday by the Ministry of Mobility and Development, during the first nine months of 2021 344 “100% electric” vehicles were registered, on average, for a total of 3,093 recognized items from January to September. 2021.

Since 2019 a trend has been confirmed, it is vehicles that consume between 16 and 18 kilowatt-hours (kWh) that register the most in Luxembourg.

From 418 articles in 2019, this number almost doubled in 2020 to 857 articles. For now, during the first nine months of the year, with 1,203 articles registered in 2021, the same rhythm is repeated.

During 2019, 859 “100% electric” vehicles were registered in the Grand Duchy, or 71 items per month, on average. In just two years, therefore, we have overcome a 484% monthly increase. In 2020, a real upward trend had already been observed with 188 “100 electric” vehicles registered, on average, each month, in Luxembourg. Between 2020 and 2021, while this last year is still going on, there is still an average increase of 182%.

More and more public money

Even if the new registrations of “100% electric” vehicles are still very minority in Luxembourg (5.4% in 2020 and an estimate of 8.2% for the year 2021), how do you explain this new love for this type of cars? ? The direct public subsidies granted to the population are certainly not unrelated to this. As of October 21, 2021, the Ministry of Mobility and Development specifies that 1,117 applications have been granted for an amount of 5,585,000 euros, in a period between January 1, 2019 and May 10, 2020.

From May 11, 2020 to March 31, 2021, 1,462 grants were awarded for a much larger amount, now amounting to € 10,192,000. Thus, during the first 16.5 months of the “Clever Primes” operation, the government offered an average of 5,000 euros per “100% electric” vehicle, while this average amount rose to 6,971 euros during the last 10.5 months analyzed. .
