“+The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power+ reached over 25 million viewers worldwide on its first day (Friday), breaking all previous records and marking the biggest premiere in Prime Video history,” the Amazon group said in a press release. which aired the first two episodes.

“It makes some sense that Tolkien’s stories, which are among the most popular of all time and considered by many to be the true source of the fantasy genre, have led us to this moment of pride,” congratulated Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios.

The series, which will air until October 14, is critical for Amazon, which wants to exist in an ultra-competitive streaming environment where Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max are already in a tough fight.

The Ring of Power takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age in Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien’s iconic trilogy that has already been made into a movie.

Amazon paid $250 million to buy the rights, and about $465 million was spent on the first season alone. The group has committed to five seasons, the final amount should well exceed one billion.
