The increase was first announced in May, when the provincial government’s minimum wage revision committee released its final report.
Another 80 cent increase is planned for April 2023, bringing the minimum wage to $14.50 an hour.
Starting October 1, 2023, the minimum wage will rise again to $15 an hour.
According to the Retail Council of Canada, the minimum wage in Newfoundland and Labrador is roughly equivalent to that in the rest of Atlantic Canada.
The minimum wage in Prince Edward Island is also $13.70, while it is $13.60 in Nova Scotia and $13.75 in New Brunswick.
