has an incredible selection of games, so picking just one can be a daunting task. Thankfully, Sony offers one of Sega’s oldest (and best) franchises.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon, a spin-off of the Yakuza series, is now available to all PS Plus subscribers. You should definitely play it.
Ichiban Kasuga is the lowest member of the Yakuza family and sent to prison. When he finally gets out, he goes on an adventure to get back on his feet and find out why he was betrayed by the yakuza family. It’s a turn-based RPG filled with wacky characters. It was one of the best games of 2020.
For those unfamiliar with the Yakuza series, fortunately, the entire series will also appear on PS Plus, though it depends on which subscription level you belong to. Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Yakuza 6: Song of Life are available in Extra ($15/month) and Premium ($18/month) tiers. Older games in the series – Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, and Yakuza 5 Remastered – are only available on the Premium tier.
In addition to the Yakuza franchise, here are some of the more notable PlayStation Plus additions to date:
There are some noteworthy games on this list, but it also lacks the Xbox Game Pass Day 1 blockbuster vibe that has big debuts like Halo Infinite.. $40 for three months or $100 for one year. (In the UK it’s £11, £32 or £84 respectively, and in Australia it’s £19, £55 or £135.)
The more expensive Premium tier ($18 or £13.49/month) also includes access to download and stream approximately 500 older games, mostly from consoles up to PS4, most of which will run at 60fps per month. It also includes access to game demos. You can try games like Horizon: Forbidden West, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Hot Wheels Unleashed. (Note: In Australia, the Premium tier is called Deluxe and costs AUD$22 per month.)
One of the best things about the new PS Plus is that there are plenty of cult and indie favorites in the Extra/Premium tier.
Here are my old or less known options:
- Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories
- XCOM 2
- Uncharted: Lost Legacy
- Pathfinder: Kingmaker
- pillars of eternity
- Tetris effect
- Outer Wildlands
The strange but interesting thing I noticed is that there is a plot from the Warhammer games. I don’t know much about Warhammer lore, but I appreciate its depth and breadth. And I enjoyed games like Inquisitor (like the sci-fi Diablo) and more recently Chaos Gate (like XCOM with Space Marines). In case you’re wondering, the PS Plus list includes:
- Chaos Bane
- Space Hulk: Deathwing
- Necromunda: Underhive Wars
- Space Hulk Tactics
I’ll be updating this list as new games are added, and my colleagues remind me of top-tier classics that I missed.
