The PlayStation VR2 will go on sale on February 22nd for €600.

Sony has revealed everything about its next VR headset other than its price and release date. Now we know that it will go on sale on February 23, 2022 at a price of 599.99 euros, which is more expensive than the PlayStation 5 itself (549.99 euros). Pre-orders will open on November 15th exclusively on the PlayStation Store. A package including Horizon Call of the Mountain will also be offered for €649.99. The charging station for the controllers will be sold separately for 49.99 euros.

No backwards compatibility, 11 games announced

A list of 11 upcoming games has also been released, in addition to the Horizon spin-off. These are The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR; VR Cities – Extended Edition; Crossfire: Sierra Squad; Light Brigade; Cosmonal High; Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue; Compilation of the aftermath of “Jurassic World”; Pistol Whip VR; Zenith: The Last City; After the fall; Tentacular. VR versions of Resident Evil 8 and No Man’s Sky are also expected, as well as The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners 2 and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.

On the other hand, bad news for owners of PSVR games: they won’t be compatible with PSVR2. Sony explained this in September by saying that the new headphones represent too much of a technological leap forward.

A technological leap… that comes with a price

In addition to completely redesigned controllers like the Quest, it uses an OLED screen with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye and a refresh rate of 90Hz to 120Hz depending on applications. The field of view will be approximately 110° diagonally. Four built-in cameras manage tracking, while inward-facing cameras allow you to follow the user’s gaze.

Also, the fact that it uses the processing power of the PS5 should allow it to deliver a visually more impressive experience than all-in-one headsets like the Quest 2 or Pico 4. The combined price of the console and headphones (€1,150 in total) means no less risks being a brake on the purchase, and Quest 3, which is scheduled for release at the end of 2023 at a price not exceeding 500 euros, will undoubtedly be serious competition.
