The Prime Minister’s Twitter account has been hacked

The post claimed that his country had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account was hacked on Sunday, his cabinet said.

The tweet announced that the Indian government had officially purchased 500 bitcoins and was “in the process of distributing them to all residents.” It came with a link pointing to a scam but, according to a tweet from Narendra Modi’s cabinet, it was quickly removed.

Authorities’ concerns about cryptocurrencies

The stunt comes as the Indian government prepares to introduce legislation to ban private cryptocurrencies and create a framework for a central bank-controlled digital currency. The latter expressed “serious concerns” about private electronic currencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and others.

Narendra Modi said that these virtual currencies run the risk of “rotting the young” if they fall into “the wrong hands” and raise “serious concerns about macroeconomic and financial stability.” In India, the virtual currency market has exploded after the 2020 Supreme Court decision to reverse a cryptocurrency transaction ban passed in 2018.

Note that Narendra Modi is the most followed political leader in the world on Twitter with over 73 million followers. This is the second time that one of your accounts has been hacked. Last year, tweets asked the population to make a donation to a false fund to fight the coronavirus.
