In essence, video games are built on what has already been done in the past. It is indeed becoming more and more difficult to find a completely original game, which is not based too much on creations that have already influenced the industry. The transition to movements and controls in 3D
It’s no secret that Super Mario 64 was a real revolution. Until now, video games have been content to offer platform games in 2D, with simple movements and controls. By switching to 3D, Nintendo took a huge risk, but finally came up with something incredibly successful, which will influence the industry as a whole.. Many have tried to do the same, few have succeeded.
Until then, to play a character, we always used the third person, especially since in the 80s / 90s, platform games dominate the world of video games. So when Wolfenstein 3D arrived, it completely changed the game: not only do we enjoy 3D (rudimentary, of course), but in addition the game allows the player to play a character in the first person.
While many triple A games are currently offered in the open world, they have not always existed. It was not until a certain GTA III to benefit from one of the first iterations of the genre in 3D, offering the player a freedom of action completely new compared to the linear games of before. A real revolution, the result of great ambition at Rockstar.
Portability in video games is almost exclusively Nintendo’s domain. Starting with the Gameboy and its many iterations (Classic, Color, Advance), then going through the various Nintendo DS and the hybrid side with the Switch, which can also be connected to television, portability was a real revolution, drastically changing the consumption of players.
Whether we like it or not, whether we think it’s a good thing or not, mobile gaming is a real revolution in the video game industry. It will have made it possible to democratize micro-transactions, popularize “casual” games, and now represents a huge share of the industry’s profits.. So many well-known manufacturers and studios in the “classic” market now offer their own mobile games …
