Third dose of Covid vaccine: who can benefit from it and since when?

The Covid-19 pandemic in Francedossier

Two months after the launch of the campaign to withdraw the vaccine against Covid-19, “Liberación” takes stock of the modalities of access to the third dose, on the eve of the celebration of the Health Defense Council that will work on its possible extension.

Halt the resurgence of the pandemic by generalizing the vaccine booster. In recent weeks, the recommendations of the Scientific Council have been arriving, in particular with the recommendation of a booster dose, six months after the complete primary vaccination, extended to the entire adult population. This will be the subject of the meeting of the Defense Health Council to be held this Wednesday. Liberation takes stock of the current provisions.

Who is eligible for the third dose?

To date, the list is still small. At least six months after the second dose, people over 65 years of age (living at home or in residences), people with comorbidities, at high risk of severe disease or severely immunosuppressed, have access to the dose of reinforcement. In addition, after a ruling by the High Health Authority on October 5, relatives over 18 years of age of immunosuppressed people are also concerned, as well as health professionals, that is, all medical personnel who work with vulnerable people.

Those who have already received the Janssen single-dose vaccine may also, after four weeks, receive a second dose of one of the messenger RNA vaccines, Pfizer or Moderna. Finally, Emmanuel Macron, during his televised speech on November 9, also announced the opening of the impeachment campaign from December 1 for people aged 50 to 64 years.

Is it mandatory?

No obligation… until December 15th. As of this date, people over 65 and those vaccinated by Janssen will have their health pass disabled if the booster dose is not administered. Then a PCR or antigen test performed in the last 72 hours will be necessary so that they can go to public places where the pass is mandatory.

People over 65 years of age should receive their third dose no later than 6 months and 5 weeks after their last injection. Those who received the Janssen vaccine have up to two months after their single-dose injection. Beyond these deadlines, the QR code will be automatically deactivated.

What vaccines? And where to make an appointment?

For the vaccine booster, only messenger RNA vaccines, namely Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, can be used for the booster dose, regardless of the vaccine used for the first doses. The High Health Authority had initially “advised against” the Moderna vaccine for the booster dose. In fact, a French study noted that the risk of myocarditis “is approximately five times lower for Pfizer’s Comirnaty vaccine compared to Moderna’s Spikevax vaccine.”

Finally, the European Medicines Agency gave its approval on October 25 for the administration of a third dose of Moderna: “The data showed that a third dose of Spikevax administered six to eight months after the second dose resulted in an increase in Antibody Levels in Adults Whose Antibody Levels Decreased “.

This third dose can already be administered to a doctor, a pharmacist, a nurse, a midwife or in a vaccination center. Appointments are available online on the websites sante.fr or doctolib.fr. In addition, a toll-free number (0800730957) has been set up, accessible free of charge every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., to facilitate home vaccination appointments or with a health professional for people over 80 years of age. years.

Expansion imminent?

Faced with the rebound in the fifth wave, the Scientific Council, in its latest opinion released on Monday, asked the government to “consider” the generalization of the third dose to the entire adult population. A measure that Christian Estrosi has just launched. This Monday, the mayor of Nice announced the opening of the third-dose vaccination places to all those who are administered over 12 years from December 1. The claimed objective is, in particular, to avoid the loss of vaccine vials already opened, but not used. Thus, three vaccination centers will be made available in the city of Nice. Christian Estrosi also called on the government to act at the national level in favor of a booster vaccine open to all.
