This new Microsoft Teams feature could save the day

The new Loop application produced by Microsoft comes to Teams chat with the aim of transforming the way of planning the collaborative work of large remote teams. As a reminder, Microsoft presented Loop at its Ignite conference for IT professionals in November. Loop is partly a rebranding of its Fluid framework technologies, but is now available as a standalone application called Microsoft Loop for easier project management and collaboration. It can be used as a standalone application or integrated with other applications, such as Teams, Outlook, OneNote, and Microsoft Whiteboard.

The three elements of Loop are components, pages, and workspaces. It is the part of the components that is released today in Teams chat for desktop computers and mobile devices. “Looping components in Teams chat offer a new way of thinking, planning and creating together,” explains Microsoft’s Daniel Vargas in a blog post. The app is rolling out now for Microsoft 365 business customers and allows users to send tables, to-do lists, and paragraphs to others in a chat. Recipients can edit content online and see changes made in real time.

Microsoft believes it will be easier to share ideas, make decisions, collect data, and track progress while collaborating on live documents. Loop adds even more immediacy by enabling collaboration within a conversation with the @mention feature. It is another way to get someone’s attention.

Loop under the microscope

Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on your appetite for distractions in the often confusing discussion threads on platforms like Slack, Teams, and Google Meet. But @mention features are here to stay, now consolidated as important parts of Google and Microsoft’s respective office productivity suites. “Loop components allow you and your team to stay connected without worrying about working with outdated information because the components are always up-to-date and up-to-date,” explains Daniel Vargas. For Loop for Teams, Loop sends a notification in Teams and an email to people who receive an @mention.

Users can click or tap any part of a component to see who wrote what. Each loop component has a file and can be found by searching Teams, Office online, and the Office mobile app. Microsoft seems to be aware that Loop, and collaboration applications in general, can be confusing for workers.

A Loop Status Report, for example, is intended to manage rapidly evolving collaborative conversations. Loop has a table that tracks deliverables in their own row, allowing others to track in columns broken down by owner, status, and expiration date.
