Tokyo 2020: Russian swimmer Ilya Borodin tests positive for COVID and is fired

Ilya Borodin, the European champion 400 meters with a complex mode, has refused to participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which begin on Friday after a positive test result for Covid-19, representatives of the Russian team said.

“European champion Ilya Borodin has been diagnosed with COVID-19, so he will not take part in the Tokyo Olympics,” the Russian Swimming Federation said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

This test was carried out during the last training camp of the Russian team in Vladivostok, before the 18-year-old swimmer left for Japan.

The Russian Federation added that all other athletes and Olympic officials had tested negative.

Borodin, one of the strong contenders for a medal in Tokyo, won the European title in Budapest in May with a time of 4 min 10 sec 02, a world junior record and sixth this year.
