What is Thor?

The Tor Project is developing a web browser based on Firefox. This is Tor Browser, free software under the revised BSD license.

The browser is also present in the latest version of the secure Tails distribution we’re talking about here.

What has changed in Tor Browser 11.5

Developers began changing the Tor login process with the release of Tor Browser 10.5 last year, including the removal of the Tor Launcher.

Circumventing censorship by the Tor network itself is sometimes difficult or confusing: “We aimed to reduce this burden with the introduction of Login Assist: a new feature that will prompt you to automatically apply the bridging configuration we think will work best for you when needed. your region,” could be read in early July on the official blog.

Tor connection and configuration wizard

The new connection wizard works by searching for and downloading an up-to-date list of country-specific options to try and use your location (with your consent). This can be done without the need to connect to the Tor network. The developers warn: we are talking only about version 1.0 and it is necessary to strengthen testing at this stage.

Version 11.5 also introduces redesigned Tor network settings, including connection statuses, simplified gateway options, connection assistance, and brand new bridge maps. This way, your saved decks appear in a more convenient stack.

Finally, HTTPS-Only mode is enabled by default for the desktop. Consequence: HTTPS-Everywhere will no longer be provided with Tor Browser. Why ? “Research by Mozilla shows that the proportion of insecure pages visited by average users is very low. (…) This change will help protect our users from SSL attacks and greatly reduce the incentive to create relay output for Man-in-the. “Medium attacks first.”

Can I use Tor on iPhone or iPad?

Yes, the answer can be found on the official website of the project:

“We recommend an open source iOS app called Onion Browser that uses Tor routing and is developed by someone who works closely with the Tor project. However, Apple requires browsers on iOS to use something called “Webkit,” which prevents the Browser from offering the same privacy and identity protection as Tor Browser.”
