Clothing, fast food, video games… What are the favorite expenses of young Toulouse people? Recently, Pixpay, the bank for 10-18 year olds co-managed by parents, published its 2021 barometer on “Teenage consumption habits”. The study was carried out with 50,000 of its users over the period from January 1, 2020 to March 15, 2021. Nationally, adolescents would carry out an average of 4 transactions of € 12.20 per month, for a budget average monthly 56 €. In Toulouse, the youth spending podium welcomes MacDonald’s in first place with 4.2% of transactions, Tisséo in second at 3.7% and on the third step we find Carrefour City with 2.9% of transactions carried out.
On a larger scale, 10-18 year olds in the Occitan region spend their money at MacDonald’s again in first position, Playstation in second and Google in third.
The nationwide study
According to the study conducted by Pixpay, French teenagers spend 23% of their budget on food and supermarkets, 13% on fast food, 9% on clothing and accessories and 6% on gaming. Thanks to the data collected, it is funny to see that the areas of spending of young people vary depending on the day of the week and the time of day. The periods when the most transactions are between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at lunchtime and between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on leaving school. During the week, it is easy to observe that young people enjoy spending in fast food restaurants, particularly on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, video games are the most popular with teenagers.
Finally, the Pixpay bank notes that twelve brands appear very regularly in spending. Again, MacDonald’s appears to be the number one expense for 10-18 year olds nationwide, followed by Apple, Playstation, Amazon and AliExpress. These five companies alone represent 10% of the monthly expenses of teens. According to the bank, “one in five transactions is made at the twelve main youth merchants”.
