Two Baltimore Orioles players with COVID-19

(St. Petersburg) The Baltimore Orioles added left-handed pitcher Keegan Aikin and outfielder Anthony Santander to the list of employees with COVID-19 on Wednesday, shortly before the game between them and the Rays in Tampa.

Akin was named the game’s starting pitcher.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde says he got the news late Tuesday night.

“We are following protocol,” said Hyde. This is the latest news, so we will eventually find out more, but at the moment both players are on the Injured List as stipulated by the COVID-19 protocol and we’ll see what happens next. ”

Alexander Wells, who was part of the reserve (taxi squad), took Akin’s place at the embankment as a starter. Outfielder Ryan McKenna, who was sent back to the AAA on Tuesday, has been reinstated to replace Santander.

“We’ve seen this a few times with other teams in the league,” Hyde said. This is the first time this has happened on our team and it is unfortunate, but I saw that other teams had the same problem and were able to fix it quickly. ”
