WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives passed a federal government funding bill through Feb. 18 on Thursday, following a deal to that effect between Democrats and Republicans in a bid to prevent a partial shutdown of administrations (“closure”).

Now it’s up to the Senate to vote on the text on Friday, a few hours before current federal funding expires at midnight.

The Democratic-controlled House voted 221-212 in favor of the finance bill, supported by a single Republican elected official.

It is not immediately clear if the Senate will vote on the text before current funding expires, as a handful of Republican senators threaten to block passage of the bill if it does not include an amendment to withdraw funding that Democratic President Joe Biden wants to assign. vaccinate employees against COVID-19.

If the Senate vote fails before midnight Friday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees could lose their jobs, resulting in the suspension or reduction of many federal programs.

On the contrary, the adoption of the measure would allow to continue financing the operations of the federal government during the health crisis at the same time that concerns are rekindled about the appearance of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which has caused an increase in contamination. .

A “shutdown” would embarrass both parties, but more particularly Joe Biden’s Democratic peers who barely control both houses of Congress.
