In the United States, a Colorado hospital rejected a transplant from a woman who did not want to get vaccinated against Covid-19. Leilani Lutali argued her conscientious objection to the use of embryonic cells from an abortion for the development of vaccines against Covid-19 (cf. Vaccine and abortion: the Vatican gives keys to discernment).
After her refusal, the hospital where she was being treated, UCHealth informed her that her status on the waiting list for kidney transplants would be “inactive”, unless she was vaccinated “within 30 days”. A policy adopted, or in the process of being adopted, by other transplant centers in the United States.
Transplant centers can “require patients to stop smoking, avoid alcohol, or demonstrate that they will take essential drugs to prevent organ rejection,” says Dan Weaver, a spokesman for the hospital.
