US regulator launches investigation into Amazon takeover of iRobot

The FTC, a US regulator of companies, will look very closely at Amazon’s acquisition of robot vacuum maker iRobot. The controller will investigate, in particular, the effect of the takeover on competition. The Federal Trade Commission will also determine if Amazon risks illegally increasing its market share.

In early August, Amazon announced that it wanted to acquire iRobot for $1.7 billion, which is exactly €1.7 billion today. iRobot makes robotic vacuum cleaners and smart floor cleaners. Already in 2002, the company made a name for itself by releasing Roomba. To date, iRobot has sold over thirty million devices worldwide. In recent years, they have been managed by their own control system using artificial intelligence.

Amazon is also active in the robot market. The American technology giant, in particular, is engaged in the creation of automated guided vehicles (AGV). These are robots that automatically sort parcels in logistics centers. In addition, Amazon is doing extensive research on drone package delivery.
