United StatesElon Musk Reactivates Donald Trump’s Twitter Account

Donald Trump, whose Twitter account has been suspended since January 8, 2021, has nonetheless said in recent days that he will remain on his Pravda social network.

It is expected that Elon Musk’s decision will cause a wave in American society and politics.

Elon Musk, the new Twitter boss, on Saturday rehabilitated the account of former US President Donald Trump, who was blocked on the social network after the storming of Capitol Hill in Washington in January 2021.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” the eccentric entrepreneur tweeted on his own behalf following the results of a survey launched among his followers. More than fifteen million responded, and 51.8% voted “for” the Republican politician’s return to the platform.

A few minutes after Elon Musk’s message, Donald Trump’s account became visible again, the last tweet is dated January 8, 2021. The number of subscribers was erratic: in less than two hours it rose to 3 million, and then plummeted. The former president has 4.57 million people on Truth Social, which he launched after leaving Twitter.

The multibillionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX, who led the social network for three weeks, in particular, suggested at the launch of the poll on Friday evening that its result could influence the decision on the return or not return of the former head of state on Twitter, as he accompanied it with the message “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” (“The voice of the people is the voice of God”). In the name of freedom of speech, he had already reinstated several other suspended user accounts on Friday.

Shortly after closing the deal to acquire the platform for $44 billion at the end of October, the leader assured that no major decision to maintain or reactivate an account would be made without the intervention of a special board. A gesture intended, among other things, to reassure advertisers, the group’s main source of income. He did not publicly indicate whether this council was created.

Trump stays on Truth Social

Twitter banned Donald Trump on January 8, 2021, two days after his supporters invaded the Capitol, facing “the risk of further incitement to violence.” Believing that this sanction represents a “morally bad and extremely insane decision”, Elon Musk in May mentioned the possible return of the former Republican president to the platform.

While many associations, authorities and advertisers fear that content on the social network is no longer moderated enough, giving way to misinformation, harassment and other abuses, the businessman was expected to turn around on this. “You are betraying our democracy,” NAACP civil rights organization president Derrick Johnson tweeted, saying that Elon Musk’s followers “do not represent America.”

The recovery of Donald Trump’s account is expected to set off waves in American society and politics, especially as he is back in the race for the White House in 2024.

Rejoicing that Twitter is “in good hands” with Elon Musk, Donald Trump has nonetheless said in recent days that he will remain on his Pravda social network even if the platform offers him only a small buzz box office compared to with Twitter, where he had over 88 million followers.

“Social truth is special”

During a Saturday video interview at a Jewish Republican Coalition rally in Las Vegas, Donald Trump praised Elon Musk’s initiative. “I love it (…). You know, he’s a hell of a character, and I love hell characters,” he said. But now he has his own network, Truth Social, he claimed.

At the thought that he might return to Twitter, he thought, “I don’t believe it because I don’t see any reason for it.” On Truth Social, he encouraged his followers to “vote positive” before adding, “But don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. Truth Social is special.”

The decision to bring Donald Trump back to Twitter anyway is likely to create a bit more turmoil within a company that has already faltered since its takeover by Elon Musk. He made his mark by firing the group’s main leaders on his first day before embarking on a massive social plan.

The controversial features were launched before they were delayed and leaked by advertisers. And this week, several hundred employees said no to an ultimatum from the new owner, who asked them to work hard to “build a revolutionary Twitter 2.0.”

“Welcome back”

On the other hand, he was welcomed by his political allies, especially in Congress. “Welcome back, @realdonaldtrump!” Republican Paul Gosar, a member of the House of Representatives, tweeted. “Anyone who thinks President Trump won’t win the 2024 primary gets a finger in the eye,” Marjorie Taylor Green, another Republican MP and ardent supporter of the former president, tweeted.

On the other hand, Republican Liz Cheney, who has become a bitter enemy of Donald Trump, reacted to the news by sending her Twitter followers to a video showing one of the hearings held by the commission of inquiry launched after the attack on the Capitol. January 6, 2021, of which she is co-chair.

“With Trump back on Twitter, time to watch the Jan 6 hearing,” she wrote. “This applies to every one of the tweets sent by Trump, including those that have been deleted, and shows how several White House officials describe his inexcusable behavior during this violence,” she added.

Trump was applauded but also criticized in Las Vegas
