Vaccination: Belgium in the top three leaders in Europe

A new milestone has been reached: Belgium has already introduced four million covid vaccines, said Sabine Storder, a member of the vaccination task force.

VSOn Tuesday, we reached a new milestone in the vaccination campaign – four million doses administered, ”said Sabine Storder, Science Program Director of the Federal Health Center of Expertise (KCE) and member of the Vaccine Task Force, during a press briefing for the Sciensano Institute of Public Health and the Crisis Center. … According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) ranking, Belgium now ranks third among European countries with the highest proportionally administered number of first doses.

“There is no longer any doubt that the campaign is in full swing now,” added Ms Storder. “In less than a month, we were able to deliver two million doses, which is equivalent to what we achieved in the first quarter of this year. However, there is still a lot of work to be done, the priority is full vaccination – and therefore the administration of two doses – for the maximum citizens residing in Belgium.

Magnification

The Immunization Task Force expects total vaccinations to rise this week. On the one hand, thanks to the vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose for full protection, and on the other hand, thanks to the introduction of a second dose of AstraZeneca to all people who received this vaccine three months ago.

The acceleration of the vaccination campaign must continue at a steady pace. “If in April there were an average of 400,000 vaccinations per week, then in May we should reach the level of 600,000 to 700,000 vaccinations per week. In June, we expect an even larger vaccination: on average, 900,000 to 1,200,000 doses will be administered every week, ”explained Sabine Storder.

Collective immunity

“This data is encouraging and allows us to predict when to determine when we expect to cross the 70% threshold of adults who have received at least one dose. According to current forecasts, this period will be between the end of June and the end of July, so we are strictly meeting the deadlines set at the beginning of the campaign, ”she continued.

Of course, this forecast remains at this theoretical stage. Among the elements that will contribute to its achievement, three criteria remain important: the delivery of vaccines, the stability of the rules for the administration of different vaccines, and the adherence of the population to vaccination. “The more vaccinated the population, the more the acceleration of the campaign will be,” stressed the director of the KCE Science Program.

Finally, Ms Storder clarified that pregnant women can also be vaccinated on a priority basis at any time during pregnancy. To do this, they are encouraged to contact their GP, who can add them to the list of priority vaccinations from Tuesday. They will then automatically receive a priority invitation from their vaccination center.
