This is not Geert Vanden Bossche’s first media outing. The Belgian scientist has been speaking since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis on various platforms in Dutch, English but also in French.
This trained veterinarian is sometimes featured on YouTube as a world-renowned authority on vaccines, but many of his colleagues don’t acknowledge his scientific background in the same way.
As a veterinarian, he has scientific training. He has also worked on vaccines during his career in the private sector but also for GAVI, “the Vaccine Alliance”, a foundation funded primarily by the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation.
However, he published very few scientific articles during his career. In total, eight scientific publications are referenced under his name in “Pubmed” (the main open access search engine for bibliographic data in all fields of specialization in biology and medicine).
Geert Vanden Bossche currently has no ongoing scientific research, as indicated by both the FWO (Fonds Wetenschapelik Onderzoek, Flemish Research Council) and FRIS portals (Flanders Research Information Space) which lists thes research projects funded by Flanders since 2008.

For Eric Muraille, biologist and immunologist at the ULB, “accepting that Geert Vanden Bossche presents himself as a scientific expert is a delusion, at least with regard to the subject matter. Only eight scientific publications appear between 1988 and 1995. Mainly studies on the effect of detergents on viruses. Therefore, he has not published in a scientific journal for almost 30 years. Furthermore, Vanden Bossche has never published on epidemiology, immunology, or vaccination in an international scientific journal, contrary to what he often insinuates. “
The also senior researcher at the FRS-FNRS considers that Geert Vanden Bossche’s speech is not that of a “scientific expert” because during the 36 minutes of the interview he does not cite any published scientific work and “he speaks only of what he has seen and saying”.
In addition, the Knack magazine revealed in March 2021 that Geert Vanden Bossche publishes articles in magazines that offer paid publications, that some of these publications mention a position at Ghent University that does not exist, and that he participated in conferences organized by actors promoting the disinformation.
Finally, more recently, the name of Geert Vanden Bossche was circulated on the floor of the House of Representatives. Precisely, the scientist is part of the list of experts who will be heard in the context of the debates on compulsory vaccination against the coronavirus. The name of the Flemish veterinarian, who advocates a general moratorium on vaccination against Covid-19, was proposed by the far-right Flemish party, the Vlaams Belang.
