Vaccination opens to all overweight obese people on Saturday, Macron announces

Vaccination will be extended “from May 1” to all people over 18 “who are seriously overweight”, or “a body mass index greater than 30”, announced Emmanuel Macron in an interview with the regional press released on Thursday.

“I invite the 2.3 million French people concerned to go to the vaccination centers this weekend,” continues the Head of State.

People over 50 who are obese, that is to say whose BMI is equal to or greater than 30 according to the definition of the World Health Organization, were already priority for vaccination.

In this interview, the president also excludes extending the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 to younger age groups, which has been demanded for several days by some doctors and elected officials.

“Not immediately. We can optimize the operation of our 1,700 vaccination centers,” said Emmanuel Macron.

“We will continue to prioritize by age because it is the most effective”, continues the Head of State, estimating that “vaccination of the most vulnerable lowers the pressure on hospital services”.

The next stage of vaccination will take place in mid-May with the opening to all people over the age of 50.
