Valve Bans Blockchain, NFT and Cryptocurrency-Based Games From Steam Gaming Platform BlockBlog

Last week, Valve, the parent company of digital video game distribution service Steam, updated its distribution onboarding guidelines. According to the recently updated rules, the company prohibits any “application based on blockchain technology that issues or allows the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFT”.

The recently updated integration guidelines for Steam say “You must not publish” applications “Built on blockchain” or “Allow trading of NFT, cryptocurrencies”

Valve appears to have an issue with games involving blockchain technology, crypto assets, or non-fungible tokenized collectibles (NFTs). The company quietly updated the homepage and the new rule was added to the “shouldn’t post on Steam” list of games. Interestingly, Steam once supported bitcoin (BTC) for in-store payments, but stopped supporting BTC in December 2017. The 2017 decision was made 18 months after Valve cleared the store to accept the main crypto asset for payments. .

The updated guidelines show that Valve is now reluctant to allow blockchain games, NFT collectibles, and crypto assets on the platform. The decision to ban these concepts comes at a time when blockchain gaming and the NFT industry have exploded in value and popularity. For example, the blockchain game Axie Infinity has been hugely popular, capturing $ 2.59 billion in all-time NFT sales, according to metric dappradar.com.

Age of Rust Developer: “It’s a Setback for Everyone”

On October 14, 2021, the developer of the blockchain game called Age of Rust clarified that the game will no longer be available on Steam. Community: A few minutes ago, we were informed that Steam will remove * all blockchain games * from the platform, including Age of Rust, because NFTs are valuable. Behind the scenes, we had good communication and we were honest with Steam, ”said the Age of Rust developer. The Blockchain game operator added:

We have chosen to be frank about blockchain gaming and NFTs. As a result, we finally lost the battle with Steam. While i’m disappointed [about] Age of Rust was removed, the fact is that blockchain games like [a] everything will be erased. Is [a] setback for everyone.

Several other video game fans and blockchain game developers have been disappointed in Valve’s decision to ban these blockchain ideas. Kotaku AU editor-in-chief Alex Walker said he was not surprised by Valve’s decision. “I’m not very surprised that Valve has banned NFTs and crypto games. I doubt it’s environmental concerns, but on top of that, they already have an aftermarket and they don’t want games to prevent that, “Walker said. The Age of Rust developer has said it respects Valve’s choice.

“Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they do not allow items that may have real value on their platform,” noted the official Age of Rust account. “While I respect your choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future. That is why I started this journey with all of you.
