Video Games: Cyberpunk 2077 blockbuster revived by Netflix series

Netflix series sometimes act like makeup. The Cyberpunk 2077 video game is currently generating renewed interest in the “gamer” community, just under two years after its marketing turned into a fiasco. On Steam, the reference platform for the sale of PC games on the Internet, this blockbuster has broken historical usage records several times in a row over the past four days.

The title peaked at 89,395 players connected simultaneously last Thursday before rising to 97,232 “gamers” then 122,376 and 136,724 on Saturday and Sunday. Across all platforms and consoles combined (PS5, Xbox Series, GeForce Now, etc.), the game also passed the one million daily active players mark in the middle of last week, its Polish publisher CD Projekt announced.

The revival is associated with the release of the animated series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”, which CD Projekt released in collaboration with the Japanese studio Trigger. Launched on Netflix nearly two weeks ago, it received great reviews on the fearsome and influential Rotten Tomatoes, an American movie review aggregator that has expanded into video games. To the point that the Polish band is now planning to retire their film and/or “live action” franchise. [en prises de vues réelles, NDLR].

A lot of mistakes

I must say that CD Projekt is used to that. Its flagship license and cash cow, The Witcher, has already shown its popularity with a Netflix series that launched its first season in late 2019. But times have changed a lot since then for a band that has seen its reputation. quite tarnished by the industrial accident that was associated with the late 2020 launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Doubtful: The many bugs in the enamel of the PS4 and Xbox One versions that turned the anticipated triumph of Cyberpunk 2077 into a catastrophic “bad noise”.

As a result, the firm sold 18 million copies in its first sixteen months of operation, when markets had originally predicted 30 million copies sold… in its first year of launch. Since then, CD Projekt has been struggling to fix the damage and has released numerous fixes. Just before the release of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series, the publisher thus released a new update supporting Cyberpunk 2077 with new content (weapons, quests, etc.), while continuing to improve it visually and graphically.

This relaunch of the title bodes well for the publisher, who will be releasing a major (and paid) expansion to their game called “Phantom Liberty” in 2023. Meanwhile, the group has climbed over 11% on Warsaw Square since the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This allows it to return to the symbolic milestone of 2 billion euros in market capitalization on Monday, a level that is still (very) far from the 10 billion wall before the release of Cyberpunk 2077.
